Greg Page Trophy

Currently named in honour of Greg Page, this was formerly known as the Les Williams Trophy.

From 1971 to 1981 the Les Williams Trophy was associated with the club 12-mile road race. The award was renamed in 1982 and the distance has been reduced several times to its current 11km (approximately 7 miles). The race is now run off-road due to the increase in traffic dangers.

Greg Page was one of those evergreen people who worked and played hard, yet never seemed to age. His association with St George spanned close to fifty years, although his business affairs took up much of his time in latter years.

Greg's first success in distance running was in 1958 when he won the club fifteen mile championship and then went on to run his first marathon. He was a very consistent cross country and road runner during the 1950's and 1960's, being club marathon champion in 1961.

Greg was a member of the club's first Executive Committee in 1964-65. He also held the position of Vice President and was a Club Official. His help with equipment on many of the club's big days was greatly appreciated. Greg received a Club Merit Award in 1975 and has sponsored trophies during the winter seasons.

Greg was a great friend to all who knew him.

Les Williams was a long-time St George distance runner, and was awarded a Club Merit Award in 1975.

When Les Williams passed away on 30 Sep 1984, our club lost one of its oldest and most loyal members. Les came to St George in 1939 after being a member of South Sydney Club for 8 years. He was elected to the position of Vice President in 1945 - a position he held until he died.

Les' most memorable occasion in athletics was carrying the Olympic Torch for one mile in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games torch relay. A foundation member of the NSW Veteran's Athletic Club, Les became one of its most prominent athletes winning gold medals in many championships in his age group.

Les enjoyed competing in fun runs, particularly the City to Surf and Kogarah Fun Run. He also completed two marathons. Les won a Merit Award in the Leader newspaper's garden competition, and was an experienced fisherman. Sport has lost one of its most lovable personalities.
