Alan Staples

 

Alan is a former high school teacher, having taught at Sydney Technical High School – a selective school for boys.

 

He joined St George District Athletic Club Inc in October in 1960 at the age of eleven. As a teenager Alan competed in track and field events ranging from 100 yards to 1 mile plus high and long jumps, as well as throws.

 

Stuart Poulter was Alan’s maternal grandfather who was Australasia’s (Australia and New Zealand) only marathon representative at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden.

 

Since 1960, Alan has run 133,000 kilometres in training and racing and has competed in 680 races, including 21 marathons and 67 ultra-marathons (ie. distances further than 42.195 km).
