Great running by the Open Women's 800m team who claimed a bronze medal; and our U14 Women's 800m relay team fought valiantly for eighth position in a highly contested race.

Our Men's teams also ran strongly on both days. The Open Men's 800m relay team won bronze with the tail runner fighting back to hold off the next team in a close and exciting finish. Great running also by the U18 Men's team claiming a bronze medal on Saturday in the 1500m event, followed by a fifth placing in Sunday's 800m relay. The Men's 200+ teams managed two strong runs but finished just outside the medals in both the 800m on Saturday and 1500m on Sunday.

Bridey Delaney competing in the Women's 1500m Final at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships

"As you expect in a world major final a very tactical race went down (65 second third lap after slow 2:25 at 800m) with a lot of jostling. Bridey managed to survive the stoush and finished with her signature kick home to come in fifth. Bridey is over the moon with this result - rank 11th out of 12 coming into the final."
    - Kim Delaney

"Bridey Delaney finished a sensational fifth in a rough, tactical race in the women’s 1500m final. Despite the slow nature of the race Delaney showed that she had been prepared for the championships immaculately by her coach, former two-mile world record holder Albie Thomas. Delaney crossed the line in her third fastest time ever: 4:21.20. “I came into the final with the slowest time, so to finish fifth is great,” said Delaney.”

11/07/08 - 12th IAAF World Junior Championships
Bridey Delaney has qualified for the final of the Women's 1500m today in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Finishing with a super burst, Bridey gained third place in heat 1 with a personal best time of 4:20.82. The final is to be held on July 13. Good luck Bridey! Results

"Bridey Delaney ran a nearly textbook perfect race in her heat of the women’s 1500m to set a new personal best and automatically qualify for Sunday’s final. The 18-year-old led through the first lap of the race in 69.35 seconds, but knowing the risk of becoming boxed in, chose to run on the outside edge of lane one. After 800m was passed in 2:23.71 the pace increased. Despite being passed Delaney maintained a clear run. At the bell she was in seventh place, but began to move up with 200m remaining and ran strongly down the straight for third place in 4:20.82.”

25/05/08 - Rockdale Community Fun Run & Walk
Results     Photos
This event could not be conducted successfully without the organisational skills of Kim Delaney, Chris Mullen, Stephanie & David Beck, Kylie Mulholland and the transport help from Gary Young, the course set up help from Kim, Chris, John Irvine, Gary Young, Leigh & Ian Nipperess, John Momi and every other volunteer that helped us with "on course" marshall jobs and / or in the finish area. So all give yourselves a "pat on the back" as we lost no competitors.

The course was clearly flagged, tree roots marked, some sandy sections and sealed pathways. So our racers, joggers and walkers had a varied surface on beachfront parklands.

This year we had more support from various sections of St. George Hospital, physiotherapist, nurses, cardiac care and for the first time patients from the stroke rehabilitation centre. A few of them were determined to make their way around the 1 K walk, but with great  determination, grit and courage, some said, "no we are going to go the whole 5 K", they may have been last to finish, but received a great reception.

The Knights of St. George Heart Association were in attendance with Dr David Horton, Dr Matthew Horton and families, who competed in the walk. Most of their patients or those who have heart bypass surgery become members of the "Zipper Club" . We had a 9 year old  Zipper Club runner with Mathew Simpson competing.

We also had 2 visually impaired athletes compete, David Munro, and Nathan Johnston who is helped by a "pilot" and in this case it was Ally Nash. The youngest finisher was a 6 week old baby who Mum carried the distance.

The run was initiated 7 years ago by Cr Shaoquett Moselman and he was on hand to start the race. Also in the run were Cr Lisa De Leau, Cr Liz Barlow and families. They presented the trophies to section winners. The RCC organisational skills were provided by Michelle Callinan. RCC funds this community event to support citizens in a healthy activity and to support local charities.

St John Ambulance were in attendance for your safety and the local Scout group provided the sausage sandwich BBQ after the run. Groups from Lafarge Plasterboard, Qantas Runners, Brighton Athletic Club, and Step into Life Sans Souci competed.

We also received sponsorship from The Athletes Foot Hurstville----thank you Jo & Brian Moro.

26/04/08 - Novice Day 2008
It was a superb effort by all of our volunteers as every person that helped in some way, contributed to the successful organisation of this important event on our calendar.

David Beck as Event Manager had details of the total area setting and volunteer lists organised. Our "Bob the Builder" crew of Kim & Chris with lots of helpers had the area completely set out well in advance of the race starting times. The registration set up made entering a breeze - so simple, watch others adapt it. We thank Jim Gallagher and his family for attending and being BBQ managers. It is only 7 weeks since Jim had major heart surgery. Our course markers did a super job and no one got lost or caught in the muddy sections. Cr Georgina Soukoulis made a special effort to attend as it is Greek New Year when families get together. We thank Brian Moro of Athlete's Foot Hurstville for attending and giving $1,000 value in vouchers as prizes.

Take a bow everyone, you were superb.
