21-22/11/09 - NSW Relay Championships

St George Results

A deserved well done and special thanks to all SGDAC competitors who turned up to compete and represent our Club at State Relays held last weekend Sat 21st and 22nd November at Blacktown Olympic Park. Additional thanks also to all the supporters who turned up to cheer on family and friends in this competition, and also Jim Gallagher who gave valuable assistance over the weekend .

Extremely hot conditions were the order of the day for both days of competition. When the temperature hit the mid 40 degrees on the second day of competition ANSW had to wisely make a safety call and cancel all the 1500M relay races and also 1600 Sprint Medley (8,4,2,2) open finals. A fair bit of disappointment for some of the keener competitors at first, but on reflection it was widely accepted that the right decision had been made by ANSW.

Some outstanding results were achieved by our Club members on the two days - the temperature was running hot and so were our women's field teams. They managed to claim 3 gold and 4 bronze medal positions.
* Women's Javelin Throw Relay U18 . Gold  (Alison Severino, Sonya Kelly, Matilda Werner & Catherine Smith)
* Women's Discus Throw Relay U18. Gold (
Alix Kennedy, Alice Iosefo, Natasha Iosefo & Zoe Schubert)

* Women's Javelin Throw Relay Open. Gold (Alison Severino, Sonya Kelly, Zoe Schubert & Matilda Werner)

* Women's High Jump Relay U18. Bronze (Sonya Kelly, Matilda Werner, Zoe Schubert & Catherine Smith)

* Women's Javelin Throw Relay U18. Bronze (Sonya Kelly, Matilda Werner, Zoe Schubert & Catherine Smith)
*
Women's Discus Throw Relay Open. Bronze (Alix Kennedy, Alice Iosefo, Ruby Ewe & Natasha Iosefo)
*
Women's Shot Put Relay U18. Bronze. (Natasha Iosefo, Alice Iosefo, Alix Kennedy, Zoe Schubert)

Alix Kennedy broke her own U18 and Open Women's Discus Club Records with a tremendous throw resulting in a New Club Record of 46.32m. This beat her previous records of 44.83m (All Schools, 5-8 Nov 09) and the record attained last season of 44.14m (30/11/08). This throw was only 62cm off the Qualifying Distance required to meet the initial selection requirement for the World Junior Championships to be held in Moncton, Canada in July 2010.

Our U18 Women's Javelin Throw Relay Gold medal winning team with a total of 134.70m were only 30cm off breaking the State Record.

There were also some good results achieved by our relay teams on the track, especially when you considered some late formations were required to help field some of these teams. I would like to acknowledge our Club Track Captain Chris Barakat and his fellow track athletes - Stephen Smith, Scott Manns, Kerry Cree and Paul Windridge - who not only performed well on the track in the Open Men's 100m and 200m heats as well as coming 6th in the Open men's long jump, but also assisted in setting up our base on both days.

As mentioned earlier, the withdrawal of the 1500m relay races was a disappointment for a number of our competitors although a few of the late recruits might have been a little relieved. Take the sporting gestures of our webmaster Michael Gentle, a late call to help form one of the 1500m relay teams, who had already ran a half marathon in the morning and his son Aaron who had completed a 10 K was also on standby as reserve for the U20 1500m team. Not forgetting Trish Simpson who had volunteered to make up the position in one of the 200+ male 1500m teams after a very late request even with a couple of painful blisters on one foot.

Our U20 800m Relay team came in 6th place with some young runners mixed in to formed this team - Tim Hogan, Thomas Delaney, Riley Delaney and 12 year old Mark Simpson who ran the final leg giving it his all on the day for his team . Our two 200+ 800m relay teams really put plenty of red and whites on the track, with all putting in their best efforts resulting in a 4th and 12th position in this event. Sean Hogan, Dale Jones, Jose Carvalho, Kim Delaney, John Irvine, David Burns, Peter Fitzpatrick and Bob Simpson made up these teams. While on the Sunday Frank Scorcelli was set to run in the 1500m 200+ and Daniel Siepen likewise in the U20 1500m race that was cancelled.

Finally the biggest thanks must go to all the St George Coaches whose time and dedication is the main reason our Club performed so successfully over the weekend - with special mention to the brilliance of Ray Russell and Michelle Douglas whose athletes performed so marvelously on both days.

Track Secretary

29/8/09 - Kogarah Hospital Bed Race

Photo: Cathy Williams

St George entered two teams at the Hospital Bed Race at Kogarah.     Photos

We finished in 4th and 5th places, narrowly beaten by the width of a wheel in the semi-final and thus missing the opportunity to race in the final.

A superb effort by all of our team members. David Beck scored a place in a team that was one racer down. Our two "jockeys" Ben Williams and Mark Simpson were excellent, and both had trained for weeks leaping out and sack racing techniques - thank you Jockeys.

Thank you for showing the "Red & White".

27/8/09 - City 2 Surf Volunteers Thank You

This year the City2Surf was the World's Largest Running event and all groups coped extremely well - some under extreme pressure. So this is an achievement of which all should be very proud.

It has not gone unnoticed by our event team here and I want to extend our thanks from Fairfax for all your hard work and support on the day. I have said it before but this event really does need volunteers to make it the success that it is today.

Please pass my thanks on to all who were involved on the day. Thank you again, and please if any of you have any feedback from the day I would love to hear it.

Kind regards

24/05/09 - Rockdale City Community Fun Run / Walk
Results     Photos

This was a well organised event with our construction, entry and recording teams all superbly co-ordinated. The revised course was good. All results were finalised very quickly so that the presentation of trophies and prizes were performed with minimum delay, and we had all prize winners in attendance to accept prizes. Rockdale Councilors all enjoyed the event. The trophies were in blue and gold - the colours of Rockdale City Council. Athletes Foot Hurstville donated many gift vouchers as prizes.

Hats off to the two stroke victims who walked the 1km circuit with real tenacity and courage - the lady at the tail end said she had trained for the day and was going to finish "rain, hail or shine".

Thank you to everyone who helped out or raced, and made the event so successful. The Knights of St George Heart Association are very thankful for our help.

Thank you to every person who helped as a volunteer in making the event such a great success as we could not do it without your help and energy. Our event manager David Beck had everything organised for smooth working of the event. "Bob the Builder" Kim Delaney had the construction crew on site from about 6:00am so that everything was constructed well and truly ahead of time - then they had to pull it all down again after the event with last people away at about 6:00pm. The Gallagher clan did a superb job with the BBQ again - a sell out job.

We thank our donors - Rockdale City Council, The Athlete's Foot Hurstville, Bucton's Butchery and Quick Response Sports.

19/4/09 - Tim Rowe 2nd in Canberra Marathon

In his marathon debut, Tim Rowe dominated the early stages of the Canberra Marathon with blistering pace, and quickly established a commanding lead. As the race progressed, the wind picked up and kept the temperature down, but the conditions were tricky with runners seeming to be always facing into a headwind. Tim was passed at around the 40km mark by last year's Canberra Marathon runner-up David Criniti, a very experienced marathon and ultra-marathon runner, but held on for a strong 2nd place finish in a time of 2:27:01. Congratulations from everyone at St George.

3/4/09 - New Friends

Three weeks ago, Ben Williams was running at the local park when John Steffensen came over and introduced himself. After chatting for some time, John invited Ben to come again the next day and he would teach Ben his warm up routine and run with him. After spending over an hour teaching Ben his stretches and drills and then racing him, John gave Ben an Australian Representative singlet and his mobile number so Ben could text John before his races. Ben's text messages may have had an impact because at the Australian Championships John ran an A Qualifier in the 400m and was selected on the Australian Team to compete at the World Championships in Berlin in August! John has won us over as fans and we will be cheering for him every time he steps up to the line. You never know who you could meet at the park!

31/03/09 - NSW Masters Championships
While our club winter cross country season kicked off to a fine start last Saturday, SGDAC also had five athletes compete in the NSW Masters Championships held over the weekend at The Crest, Bankstown. This was the final track & field event for the 2008-09 NSW season and resulted in some great performances by our club members.

After Saturday's cross country race, Belinda Martin backed up with a gold medal performance in the Women's 5000m (35-39), and Frank Scorzelli backed up to claim silver in the Men's 5000m (60-64). Dale Jones achieved two seasons-best times in the Men's 800m (50-54) and Men's 1500m (50-54) to pick up two bronze medals. It was good to see Mendo Stojkovski competing alongside Dale in both the 800m and 1500m events, while our evergreen Vilis Gravitis finished fifth in the Men's 800m (65-69).

A great end to a magnificent track and field season for SGDAC.

27/3/09 - New Club Records
Laura Flynn has set a new Pole Vault club record of 2.80m in the Women's Open, Under 20 and Under 18 categories in the recent National Championships in Brisbane. This eclipses the previous club record of 2.70m that Laura equalled last month. Congratulations from everyone at St George.

21/3/09 - National Open & AWD Championships
The 2009 National Open & AWD Championships have been held at QEII Stadium in Brisbane from 19-21 March. St George has been represented by several athletes, and some great results have been achieved. 16/3/09 - Track Report
The weekend saw the final Allcomers event for the 2008-09 track & field season. There were some excellent performances to cap off a great season for many of the St George athletes.

Christopher Barakat cracked a season's best, winning the Men's All Grades 110m Hurdles. Riley Delaney ran a PB for 800m, placing second in the C Grade 800m. Paul Windridge ran well in both the 800m and 100m events, while young member Scott Manns put in a really great effort competing in three events - 100m, 200m & 100m Hurdles.

Next week the National Championships are taking place in Brisbane from Thursday to Saturday; while many of our younger athletes will be competing in the State LA Championships at SOPAC from Friday night to Sunday.

The 87th Australian Athletics Championships and Selection Trials will incorporate the Australian Open & U20 Combined Events Championships and the Australian Interstate Youth (U18) Match. The event will serve as the selection trials for the Australian team to compete at this year’s world championships to be held in Berlin, Germany in August. As such, all Australian athletes will be determined to perform to the best of their ability and to book their ticket to Germany.

9/3/09 - New Club Records
Congratulations to Bridey Delaney who has continued her outstanding season with two more Club Record breaking performances. On 28 February at the Sydney Track Classic Bridey broke her existing Senior Women's Club Record for 800m, setting a new mark of 2:05.49. This was followed on March 3 at the World Athletics Tour Melbourne with a new Senior Women's Club Record for 1500m of 4:14.83, which smashed her previous Club Record of 4:17.66.

9/3/09 - NSW Under 16, Under 20 & Under 23 Championships
Some very good results achieved by St George athletes at the weekend's Age Championships held at SOPAC. Luke Hamer claimed Gold in the U20 Men's 400m (47.74 PB). Silver Medals were won by Sonya Kelly in U20 Women's High Jump, Connor Mulholland in U16 Men's 3000m (9:48.97 PB) and Matt Ferencak in U16 Men's Javelin. 6/3/09 - World Athletics Tour Melbourne
Three St George athletes competed in Melbourne last night in bleak and windy conditions. All managed to perform brilliantly in elite international fields.

Competing in the Men's 5000m, an event that was also the Australian 5000m Championship title race, Ben St Lawrence finished in fourth place behind three Olympians. This gives Ben second place in the National Title, and narrowly missed John Andrews' club record that was set in 1989. Tim Rowe finished in 12th place (9th Australian) with a season-best time, while Stephen Thurston finished 14th (11th Australian). In winning the event, Collis Birmingham defied the conditions to record a coveted Berlin A-qualifying time, while Andrew Baddeley and Bernard Kipagat both clocked B-qualifying times.

Michael completed the 3km swim / 83km cycle / 20km run event in 3rd place (Pro Division) in a total time of 3:51:55. By finishing in the top-5, Michael has now gained automatic selection for the Long Course World Triathlon Championships. Congratulations Michael.

22/2/09 - Track Report
Saturday's Allcomers Meet saw all clubs with lower competitor numbers as a result of the LAA Regional titles. St George was represented by Laura Flynn who again performed well, with a result that was just outside her pole vault personal best that she set while winning the State U18 championship last week. Good news for St George saw many junior athletes achieving personal best or seasons best efforts at the LAA Regional titles, with several now progressing to the State LA Championships to be held at Homebush on 20-22 March.

17/2/09 - New Club Records
Congratulations to Christie Douglas who set a new club record for Triple Jump of 11.73m at last year's Pacific School Games. This eclipses her previous club records in U16, U18 and U20 (11.53m, 20/11/08) and Senior Women (11.66m, S Liku, 12/2/95).

Congratulations to Alix Kennedy who set a new club record for Discus Throw of 44.14m at last year's Pacific School Games. This eclipses her previous club records in U18 and U20 and Senior Women (42.39m, 18/10/08).

Congratulations to Laura Flynn who has equalled the club record for Pole Vault (2.70m) in U18, U20 and Senior Women at last weekend's NSW Open, Under 18 and AWD Championships.

15/2/09 - NSW Open, Under 18 and AWD Championships
Congratulations to Alix Kennedy (1st, U18 Discus Throw), Bridey Delaney (1st, Open 1500m) and Christie Douglas (2nd, U18 Triple Jump) for their podium finishes today. Results for St George athletes.

14/2/09 - NSW Open, Under 18 and AWD Championships
Congratulations to Alison Severino (1st) and Sonya Kelly (3rd) on gaining podium finishes in the U18 Women's Javelin Throw, and Belinda Martin (3rd) in the Women's 10,000m final on the opening night of competition. Congratulations to Laura Flynn on winning the Women's U18 Pole Vault today. Best wishes to Luke Hamer who has qualified for the final of the Men's Open 400m and Christopher Barakat who has qualified for the final of the Men's 110m Hurdles, both to be run tonight.

10/2/09 - Track Report
The delayed start to Saturday's Allcomers meeting gave some reprieve to the competitors who made the journey to battle both the elements and fellow athletes. Not far from the SOPAC track, the Parramatta Road temperature gauge was still reading 39 degrees at 6pm. Some track officials commented the track temperature had reached mid forties earlier in the afternoon, so a good decision by ANSW to move back the program of events.

The warm windy conditions made seasons best performances hard to come by, but once again SGDAC competitors put in top efforts all round with several members achieving top-5 finishes in their event. Christie Douglas claimed 2nd in the women's open triple jump, Alison Severino finished 3rd in the open women's javelin throw, and Bridey Delaney took out the open women's 1500m in convincing fashion by finishing almost 100m ahead of the next athlete.

Laura Flynn was back in action for the first time in the new year and equalled her season's best performance coming 4th in the women's pole vault. Riley Delaney finished 4th in the men's C-Grade 1500m with a good PB. Daniel Siepen ran on gamely throughout the men's B-Grade 1500m, and after doing all of the front running was put under siege in the last 200m by a fair number of sitters, before finishing with a time just outside his season best. Kim Delaney produced another solid performance in the men's 1500m.

6/2/09 - Delayed Start for Allcomer's Meet Tomorrow
Due to forecast high temperatures, ANSW have announced a delayed start to the Allcomers competition to be held at SOPAC. Please refer to ANSW website for latest events schedule.

31/01/09 - New Club Record
Congratulations to Bridey Delaney who has smashed the Open Women's Club Record for 800m today in winning the 800m event at the Allcomers meet with a time of 2:05.49. This breaks Bridey's previous record of 2:09.18 that was set just nine days ago.

31/1/09 - Track Report
Having a large number of our younger athletes already selected to compete at the Zone LAC Championships all weekend meant that our Club, like most others, face a reduced potential to field competitors. St George had ten competitors make it out to the SOPAC track at Homebush for this Allcomers meet. Great efforts all round, with several St George athletes achieving season-best performances. A club record was broken by Bridey Delaney, while Luke Hamer, Chris Barakat and Todd Peters all claimed top-3 positions in their events. It was also good to see Dale Jones, Isaq Ali, Paul Windridge and Daniel Siepen back in action and performing strongly.

26/01/09 - Australia Day Fun Runs
Congratulations to Connor Mulholland (1st - 15 & Under Male), Riley Delaney (3rd - 15 & Under Male), Kim Delaney (1st - 50+ Male) and Frank Scorzelli (3rd - 50+ Male) in the City of Canterbury Australia Day 5.5km Fun Run, and also Paul Windridge (3rd) in the Menai Marketplace 3km Fun Run. Results for St George athletes.

22/01/09 - New Club Record
Congratulations to Bridey Delaney for setting a new club record for 800m (2:09.18) in the Open Women's category. This eclipses the mark previously set by Phoebe Gunning (2:09.50) in December 1997.

22/01/09 - Waratah Invitational Series and NSW 5000m Track Championship
Very warm and windy conditions greeted all competitors at the Waratah Invitational and NSW 5000m Track Championships held at SOPAC.

Great race by Belinda Martin to finish 6th in 17:22 - on the comeback and getting stronger with every race. In the men's 5000m St George athlete Tim Rowe claimed third place in 14:09 amongst some hard fought competition with James Nipperess taking out the event in 14:02 and Jeff Hunt second. St George's Stephen Thurston claimed a top-10 finish with his 6th place in 14:20. Our master vet James Owens ran a fine race to finish 7th in Section 1 with 18:33.

In the Waratah Invitational, St George had two competitors who both competed more than admirably. Alison Severino claimed 3rd in the Women's Javelin Throw, and Bridey Delaney claimed 2nd in the Women's 800m.

3/1/09 - NSW Underage Steeplechase Championships
Congratulations to Connor Mulholland who has won the NSW U16 Men's 2000m Steeplechase Championships held at Campbelltown. Connor's time of 6:40.93 was also a 15-second personal best. Well Done.
